Escaping from Imperial stormtroopers that invaded her consular ship, Princess Leia Organa hid in the dark innards of the blockade runner. Cornered, she defended herself with a slender, aristocratic model of blaster pistol, with which she punched a deadly hole into the armor of a stormtrooper pursuer. She only managed to squeeze off a single shot before being stunned and taken captive. A slender, aristocratic armament, a sporting blaster pistol is a weapon often used by those of noble heritage. Although the more rugged models are used for game-hunting, the sporting blaster is a common defense used by the rich who don't want to be saddled with awkward, cumbersome, utilitarian weapons. After all, a blaster pistol is so common.

Sporting blasters have shorter effective ranges and deliver less explosive power than a standard blaster pistol. The trade-off, though, is that these guns are typically more affordable and require less bureaucratic hassle to obtain. Such availability has made it a favorite of the cash-strapped Rebel Alliance, which most often has to settle for whatever weaponry it can get. Princess Leia Organa favored a Drearian Defense Conglomerate Defender pistol. Trained by mercenary Giles Durane, Leia developed remarkable accuracy with the weapon at a young age, even though her Senatorial duties rarely placed her in the line of fire. By the time her Rebel connections were exposed, Leia had many opportunities to prove her deadliness with her preferred weapon.
