Success in the fringe of smuggler culture is usually dictated by the performance of your vessel. Since you're breaking the law anyway by smuggling contraband, you might as well trick out your starship with all manner of illegal modifications. Outlaw techs maintain hidden outposts in shadowports and shady worlds where a spacer with sufficient credits and no questions asked can outfit his light freighter with military-grade componentry. Among the most respected of the outlaw techs was a man simply known as Doc. For his legendary repair and modification work, he was a wanted criminal throughout the Empire. During the early years of the Galactic Civil War, Doc sought refuge in Corporate Sector space, maintaining an outlaw tech base with his beautiful young daughter, Jessa.
Doc was born into a life of luxury as Klaus Vandangante, son of a wealthy publishing executive. His family wealth afforded him a valuable education which honed his already prodigious technical talents. He was hired by Alkherrodyne Propulsion, where he was appalled by the corners cut by the profit-hungry corporation. Despite his warnings, his employers went ahead and approved the release of the Azaria 66, a product that proved faulty and resulted in many accidents. Eager to find someone to blame for the incident, the upper management of Alkherrodyne pinned it on Vandangante, bankrupting his family.
Blacklisted and creditless, Vandangante drifted aimlessly into the underworld of spacer culture. There, he met and fell and love with an outlaw tech named Shardra, and together the two would quickly become the most sought after mechanics on the fringe. After Shardra died in an accident, it fell to Doc to raise their daughter, Jessa. Being a father was much tougher than being a mechanic, but he nonetheless taught Jessa everything he knew.
Doc's reputation eventually resulted in him being nabbed by the Security Police of the Corporate Sector Authority. He was incarcerated at Star's End, a stasis prison on the remote world of Mytus VII. His disappearance sparked a memorable adventure for Han Solo, who led the mission to free a number of political and common criminals from the Authority installation.
