On their homeworld, the H'nemthe males outnumber the females 20 to one. Much of their culture has been shaped by this disparity between genders, and has resulted in a strange mating ritual. After mating, a female H'nemthe ceremonially eviscerates the male, killing him with her razor-sharp tongue. To a H'nemthe, procreation is the ultimate spiritual fulfillment in their rigidly structured society. The discovery of true love and the creation of new life is not taken lightly by H'nemthe males, who must sacrifice their lives to continue their bloodline. H'nemthe females are protected by law, and virgins are very rarely permitted to leave the planet. Strict traditions ensure that a H'nemthe virgin remains a devout vegetarian, not tasting flesh until they consummate their love with a doomed mate. As such, female H'nemthe tend to be very sheltered and naïve. The quartet of cones atop a H'nemthe's head contain sensory organs that detect heat differences in their environment and emotional differences in other creatures. Using these cones, H'nemthe have become very efficient hunters.
