Despite separation from family and a Jedi Code that forbids emotional attachment, the life of a Padawan learner is not entirely lonely. The bond between master and apprentice can be as strong as blood, and many Jedi students develop close friendships with their fellow Padawans.

Tru Veld became Anakin Skywalker's closest friend during their teenage years. The two shared a love of technology and a knack at repairing machinery (they both met while rummaging through a Coruscant junk heap), though they were opposites in many ways. Whereas Anakin was impetuous and kept his inner turmoil to himself, Veld was more deliberate and centered, and held no hidden demons. He had a remarkable affinity to the living Force, which often expressed itself in a strong empathy to all living beings. This caring nature led to Veld easily making and keeping friends. Among the missions Veld and Skywalker shared were to the disaster-plagued world of Radnor, and patrolling the Galactic Games on Euceron.

As a Teevan, Veld was tall and lanky with a silvery complexion and slanted silver eyes. He was apprenticed to the Jedi Ry-Gaul.
